Erin Koch is an accomplished GIS Manager and IT professional with 17 years of experience supporting state agency environmental and natural resources-related objectives. Her areas of expertise include development, planning, and coordination of large multi-disciplinary GIS projects, working with decision-makers to promote GIS use, project management, oversight and scheduling, and data management. Erin has developed and led workshops for advanced mapping instruction and GIS skills for scientists and non-scientists.
She was the senior cartographer for the South Carolina Geological Survey for 10 years, where she oversaw the production of more than 80 maps for publication and distribution to the public. Later she served as the GIS Manager for the Marine Resources Division at SCDNR supporting projects in the coastal environments in SC involving biologists, ecologists, and geologists.
Since joining HDR 3 years ago, Erin has supported clients in a wide variety of market sectors including energy, transportation, and water. She’s a practitioner and promoter of all things GIS and is very happy to share her story with you!
Dr. Jim Myers is an assistant professor at American Public University System (APUS) who teaches geography, GIS, and related courses. He studied natural resource management and human ecology as an undergraduate. He earned a Ph.D. in geography from Rutgers University, where he studied landscape change and how it interacts with landscape preservation efforts. His research interests include using GIS to improve conservation management efforts and to assess the environmental impacts of long-term landscape change. He’s worked with conservation and environmentally oriented GIS for 25 years, with positions in academia, government, and with non-profit organizations. This includes time spent with the New Jersey Endangered and Nongame Species Program and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, working on habitat ranking and land preservation prioritizing projects of statewide importance. On a more local level, he’s assisted local conservation organizations with their mapping and analysis needs.
Eric Charlton is currently the GIS manager at Sapphos Environmental Inc. He has more than 30 years of experience in the GIS and environmental fields. He has a B.A. in geography and GIS Certificate from the University of California Riverside. He has been at Sapphos Environmental for 16-years and was responsible for building the company’s GIS department from scratch. At age 38 Mr. Charlton transitioned from a career in urban planning to GIS. At Sapphos Environmental, Inc., Mr. Charlton has been responsible for the development of innovative applications of GIS for a myriad of projects, including utility scale wind and solar energy, trail and park planning, rail and transportation, natural gas utilities, and urban planning zoning and ordinance updates. Mr. Charlton has also been responsible for the development of innovative GIS applications for many of these projects that included constraints analysis; visibility analysis; and large and small-scale impact analysis and avoidance for cultural and biological resources; and wind energy project spatial database development.
Jason Hill works for WSP Engineering and is currently consulting as GIS Coordinator for the California High Speed Rail Program (CHSRA) helping to improve data sharing and collaboration throughout the state, strategically partnering with design-build teams, regional contractors, and project management teams, to ensure proper practices for CHSRA GIS standards and requirements compliancy. Before this, Jason worked as GIS Coordinator at the City and County of San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for over 10 years designing, developing, and deploying GIS solutions for the Airport and its valued stakeholders.
